Greener Hours makes it easier for you to lower your carbon footprint not by using less energy, but by using better, cleaner energy. With Greener Hours informing you daily of when the energy flowing into your home is cleanest, you can lower your carbon footprint, send a clear signal to the energy market and earn points that will deliver benefits to you and your local community. All through the flick of a switch, and in the comfort of your own home.

Up until now, none of us have really known that our individual carbon footprints are as much about when we use energy as how much we use. Even if we’re on a ‘green tariff’ from our energy provider, our carbon impact is still driven by when we use energy. This is because the energy coming into all our homes is from a complex national mix of sources that changes moment by moment.

Just like using a weather forecast, with Greener Hours you can see the carbon intensity of the energy coming into your home right now, and how it will vary over the next 24hours. Greener Hours also shows you the greenest time to use energy in your home every day, meaning if you can move using some appliances to this point, you’re maximising your carbon savings.

As far as we know, though, there’s no weather forecast currently available that allows you to decide what the weather’s going to be. But with Greener Hours, you can help decide how the UK creates its energy. The more we use energy when our supply is rich in renewable sources (e.g. wind, solar and water), the more important those renewable sources become, and the larger part they play in our national energy. That means a cleaner future for all of us and our children.

As well as aiming for a cleaner future, Greener Hours also aims to reward you straight away for smarter energy use. Earn Greener Hours points with each action within the app, and you’re on your way to further clean energy benefits together with benefits you get to choose for your local community.

1) See regional carbon intensity forecasts for the next 24hrs and beyond, including the Greener Hours each day for your area.

2) Commit in-app to use your appliances closer to, or on, the Greener Hours each day.

3) Earn GH Points for committing and confirming appliance use each day, along with other clean-energy behaviours.

4) See your Greener Hours Influence effect within the wider GH smart energy network.
